Volume 18
It’s now the end of October and things are clear; educators are not ok. The best part of my job is listening to educators and uplifting their voices, but lately, it’s been completely overwhelming. Sometimes, I just sit paralyzed by their social posts. I’m not ok with what’s happening to educators, and I’m not even an educator. I can’t seem to shake the fundamental lack of support they experience.
The data are also showing that students are not ok. An alarming number of students are demonstrating delayed social and emotional skills, and even veteran educators aren’t sure of what to do to help.
So let’s recap. Educators are not ok. Students are not ok. Oh, and this latest report suggests that we may not have the funds to fix things.
So what do those of us outside of classrooms do? We support educators as much as we can. We don’t attack them. We trust them. If you’re a parent, have open conversations with your child’s teacher about any concerns. If you’re an education leader, listen to your educators and involve them in decisions. There’s no silver bullet to fixing America’s public school system, but I do know that it’s the small things that continue over time that make a difference. It’s easy in a moment like this to start blaming and attacking. It’s harder to show up every day and commit to small actions that help. What do you choose?
