Volume 22

In March, artificial intelligence (AI) made headlines across the country. In the same week, ChatGPT launched ChatGPT4, Microsoft released Copilot, and Google brought AI to the workplace.

Many educators are beginning to experiment with AI and understand how it can be used in the classroom.  A recent survey cited that 51% of teachers reported using ChatGPT, with 40% using it at least once a week, and 53% expecting to use it more this year. On top of that, this survey found that 73% of teachers agree that ChatGPT can help their students learn more.

Despite this, we have seen some knee-jerk reactions from districts and schools banning ChatGPT entirely (although some are now rethinking this move). None of us know what is yet possible with AI as it continues to evolve but we need to be able to learn it to be able to understand its potential, pitfalls, and limitations. My friend, Tom Whitby, summarized this beautifully:

Teachers have always aimed to prepare students for a future world that is fundamentally different, but with this AI influx, it has quickly illustrated how important it truly is to evolve and embrace the unknown. AI is not going away. Teachers are already using it to organize lesson plans, make learning more accessible,  interact with parents, differentiate learning materials, give students feedback,  save time, help teachers focus more on authentic, real-world problem-solving and collaboration, and so much more. How are you using AI?

Take care,

PS: Still unsure if you should embrace AI? I had ChatGPT convince you in a way that only the great Lionel Richie could: "Hello, is it AI you're looking for? Don't be afraid to explore. Machine learning can bring new doors. All night long, AI can help us soar!" And if you are not rolling-on-the-floor laughing yet, try  CatGPT. You're welcome. 🀣
